SSI at the annual meeting of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials

During the session Turning the Tide: The Route to Sustainability for Shipping SSI ED Andrew Stephens gave fellow members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) a sneak peek at our yet-to-be launched report on The Role of Sustainable Biofuels in the Decarbonisation of Shipping.

Contributing experience from the aviation industry, Robert Boyd, of IATA, focused on the importance of engaging airlines and shippers in the sustainability journey from the very beginning, with both education and support being key to ensuring their buy-in. Pedro Piris-Cabezas, Senior Economist at the Environmental Defense Fund, discussed the complexities of developing CORSIA for the aviation industry, and highlighted the importance of focusing on the emissions reductions that alternative fuels can provide toward achieving the Paris Agreement’s climate commitments and the SDGs.

RSB is a valuable forum in which SSI is engaging to exchange and share learning from both aviation's and shipping's respective decarbonisation journeys. RSB also played a key role in our inquiry on the role of sustainable biofuels in the decarbonisation of shipping.
