RightShip becomes latest member of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative

Joins high profile leadership group working to create a more sustainable maritime industry

London – 30th March 2017 – The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (“SSI”), a pioneering coalition of companies from across the global shipping industry, today announced that RightShip, provider of the world’s most comprehensive online maritime safety and environmental risk management system, is the latest company to join its membership.

RightShip joins other SSI members, including Maersk, ABN-AMRO, AkzoNobel, Wärtsila, Bunge, Cargill, China Navigation, Lloyd’s Register, IMC and U-Ming, who are working together to help create a more environmentally sustainable maritime industry by 2040.

RightShip is committed to improving safety and environmental standards within the shipping industry, using its vetting platform to support the removal of sub-standard ships from the supply chain, creating a safer fleet and improving seafarer welfare. The company has developed a Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rating (GHG Rating), which is now used on one in every five vessels chartered worldwide. The GHG Rating compares the theoretical CO2 emissions of ships of a similar size and type, increasing transparency and allowing charterers to factor sustainability into their vessel selection process. A carbon-neutral organisation, RightShip also offers customers the ability to measure and offset the carbon emissions of their own shipping operations.

Ian Petty, General Manager, the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, said:

“Since its inception, the SSI has been bringing together influential companies and organisations from the global shipping sector in order to make sustainability mainstream. We are therefore delighted that RightShip has chosen to join the SSI. RightShip will add its influential voice to ours, providing us with deep insights and learnings, and will work directly with our members to drive sustainable and progressive change. Its two core principles of maritime safety and emissions reduction reflect critical areas of the SSI’s Vision to 2040, including the dramatic reduction of GHG emissions, and the provision of healthy, safe and secure environments for those working within the shipping industry. RightShip also shares the SSI’s dedication to increased transparency and accountability across the shipping industry and associated supply chains, an area we are looking forward to developing with them.”

Commenting on the membership of the SSI, Kris Fumberger, Sustainability Manager at RightShip, said:

“Our long term strategy for sustainability and environmental performance fits well with the goals identified by the SSI, and we look forward to working closely with SSI’s members to help make the shipping industry more sustainable. RightShip believes that through cross-industry collaboration we will have greater ability to effect the environmental and social impact of the global shipping industry. We are very excited to be joining an organisation that shares this common goal with us.”

About the Sustainable Shipping Initiative

The Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI) is an ambitious coalition of shipping leaders from around the world that is taking practical steps to tackle some of the sector’s greatest opportunities and challenges. The group is working to achieve a vision of an industry in which sustainability equals success.

It is the first time the shipping industry has joined forces on such a cooperative global scale to tackle big sustainability issues. The ultimate goal is to show that collaborative action is possible, and to mobilise support across the industry, demonstrating that shipping can contribute to – and thrive in – a sustainable future.

The cross-industry SSI has members from a number of companies representing ship owners and charterers, shipbuilders, engineers and service providers, banking and classification societies. Member companies include ABN AMRO, AkzoNobel, Bunge, Cargill, China Navigation Company, IMC, Lloyd’s Register, Maersk Line, U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation and Wärtsilä.

In September 2013 the SSI became an independent charity. The SSI was initially facilitated by global sustainability non-profit Forum for the Future in conjunction with WWF, the global conservation NGO. Forum for the Future and WWF remain as SSI NGO members.
