Priya Blue Industries Pvt Ltd becomes a member of high-profile leadership group working to create a more sustainable maritime industry

London, UK – 21 May 2018 – Certified Ship Recycler Priya Blue Industries has become a member of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative (SSI), a pioneering coalition of companies from across the global shipping industry. Priya Blue joins other SSI members who are working together to help create a more environmentally sustainable maritime industry by 2040. Priya Blue is a pioneer in sustainable ship recycling in India. Its holistic approach to sustainable ship recycling includes continuously improving health and safety for workers, and reducing pollution and improving the handling of hazardous materials.

Workers receive periodic health checks and accommodation is provided for many of the workers at Priya Blue, including some family rooms. In the recycling facility, Priya Blue has invested in impermeable flooring for cutting surfaces, and in cranes with an SWL of 300 tonnes for lifting large sections onto the impermeable surface directly from the ship. Further large investments are being made to increase the impermeable floor in the third cutting zone, and to improve drainage. Priya Blue’s ship recycling practices are Class NK certified, compliant with the Hong Kong Convention, and measures are being taken to make it an EU compliant
ship recycling yard.

Tom Holmer, General Manager of SSI, said: “Priya Blue provide SSI with direct input from a ship recycling facility. With the involvement of SSI in sustainable ship recycling, Priya Blue’s views and attitude towards working practices, safety and pollution prevention will give an industry perspective on an issue which is growing in importance. They have been active members of the SSI ship recycling working group for over a year, and we welcome them into
full membership of the SSI.”

Gaurav Mehta, Director at Priya Blue said: “SSI has been useful in giving us the vision to see what the future holds for the ship recycling industry, and what other stakeholders in the maritime industry are looking for.”
