The annual TradeWinds Ship Recycling Forum was held on 5-6 March in Hong Kong, marking the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong International Convention For The Safe And Environmentally Sound Recycling Of Ships (HKC). While ten years have passed since its adoption, the Convention is not yet in force, with only eight countries ratifying to date.

A year ago the Ship Recycling Transparency Initiative (SRTI) was launched at in Hamburg at Tradewinds 2018. Since then the SRTI online platform went live and the initiative already has 17 signatories, including seven shipowners disclosing information on their approach to ship recycling.

At this year’s Tradewinds SSI Executive Director Andrew Stephens will be speaking on the Shipowners Panel: Beyond CSR and launching the first SRTI report that highlights data disclosed via the SRTI online platform. SSI Members and members of the SRTI Steering Group will also be speaking, including: Simon Bennett of the China Navigation Company, John Kornerup Bang and Capt Prashant Widge of Maersk and Gaurav Mehta of Priya Blue.

Information on the launch of the SRTI report will be posted on the SSI website and SRTI online platform, as well as shared via social media.
